A step-through electric bike has a low or dipped top tube, so you can walk through the frame instead of swinging a leg over the saddle. It is a common choice for commuting and errands, and it is worth understanding why before you choose.
Who a step-through frame suits
- Riders with limited hip or knee flexibility, or anyone who finds swinging a leg over awkward.
- Everyday clothes: skirts, coats and work trousers are easier on a low frame.
- Stop-start city riding: getting on and off at junctions, shops and the school gate is quicker and more stable.
- Carrying luggage: with a loaded rear rack or a child seat, stepping through avoids catching the load with your leg.
Step-through or step-over?
A step-over (diamond) frame is usually a little stiffer and lighter for the same strength, which matters most on rough ground or for heavier riders. A step-through frame trades a small amount of stiffness for much easier access. For city and commuting use, most riders will not notice the difference in stiffness, but they will notice the convenience every day.
What to check before you buy
- UK rules: in England, Scotland and Wales an electric bike must have a motor of no more than 250 W continuous rated power, with assistance cutting out at 15.5 mph, to be used like a normal bicycle. Read UK electric bike laws explained.
- Battery size in Wh: this tells you more about range than any headline figure. See how much range do I need.
- Weight: the motor and battery make e-bikes heavy. If you have stairs, check the total weight carefully.
- Frame size and rider height: low frames fit a wider range of heights, but check the manufacturer’s size table.
- Brakes and lights: hydraulic disc brakes and integrated lights make daily riding safer.
- Delivery and returns: how the bike arrives, what assembly is needed, and how a return works if it is not right.
Do we sell step-through electric bikes?
Not yet. Our current range is full-suspension fat tyre e-bikes, which use a step-over frame. We may add step-through models in future, but only once we can verify their specifications and UK delivery. In the meantime you can browse our electric bikes or use the Bike Finder.
This guide is general information for riders in the UK. Rules and product details can change, so check GOV.UK and each bike's specifications before you buy.
