Fat tyre electric bikes are easy to spot: tyres around 4 inches wide instead of the usual 1.5 to 2.4. They look bold, but the real question is how they ride and whether they suit your journeys.
What fat tyres do well
- Comfort: a large volume of air works like extra suspension over potholes, cobbles and speed bumps.
- Grip: the wide contact patch holds better on gravel, towpaths, wet leaves and loose surfaces.
- Stability: the bike feels planted at low speed, which many new riders find reassuring.
The trade-offs
- Weight: fat tyre e-bikes are heavier than city e-bikes. Think about stairs and storage before you buy.
- Rolling resistance: wide tyres take a little more energy, so a larger battery helps keep range up.
- Space: they need a wider rack or stand when you park.
Who they suit
Fat tyres make sense if your roads are rough, if you mix streets with towpaths and parks, or if comfort matters more to you than low weight. If you carry your bike up stairs every day, a lighter city e-bike may be easier to live with. Read how much range do I need, then browse our electric bikes.
Tyre pressure matters
Fat tyres run at low pressures, often well under 30 psi. Check the pressure printed on the tyre wall every couple of weeks: too soft and the bike feels slow, too hard and you lose the comfort you bought it for.
