A hardtail has suspension at the front only. A full-suspension bike adds a shock at the rear. Both can make a great electric bike; the right one depends on your roads and your priorities.
Full suspension: comfort first
Rear suspension keeps the back wheel in contact with the ground and takes the sting out of potholes, kerbs and broken surfaces. On a long ride it reduces fatigue in your back and wrists. Combined with fat tyres, it gives one of the smoothest rides you can get.
Hardtail: lighter and simpler
Without a rear shock there are fewer moving parts, the bike is usually lighter, and more of your pedalling goes straight to the road. On smooth city streets and cycle lanes the difference in comfort is smaller.
How to choose
- Rough roads, towpaths or weekend trails: full suspension.
- Smooth commute and stairs at home: hardtail or a rigid city e-bike.
- Carrying luggage on a rack: check that the frame design includes a rear rack mount.
