The battery is the most valuable part of an electric bike. A few simple habits keep it safe and help it last for years.
Charging
- Use only the charger supplied with your bike, or an exact replacement from the manufacturer.
- Charge on a hard, dry surface, away from anything flammable, and not in a hallway that is your only way out.
- Do not charge overnight unattended or while you are away from home.
- Unplug the charger once the battery is full.
- Let the battery cool down for a while after a long ride before charging.
Storage
- Store the battery indoors at room temperature, especially in winter.
- For long breaks, keep it partly charged (around half to two thirds) and top it up every month or two.
- Never leave it completely empty for weeks.
When to stop using a battery
If a battery is swollen, damaged, very hot, smells unusual or has been dropped hard, stop using it and contact the seller. Do not try to open or repair it. UK fire services publish practical e-bike battery safety advice worth reading.
